Coaching

Mission: To aid health care professionals grow in the art of medicine

What is coaching?
The International Coaching Federation uses this definition:
"Professional coaching is an ongoing partnership that helps clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Through the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their performance, and enhance their quality of life."

Coaching usually leads to significant improvements and many changes in one’s life. In other words "a coach is a trusted role model, adviser, wise person, friend, Mensch, steward or guide ---someone trained and devoted to guiding others to increased competence, commitment, and confidence." F. Hudson, 1999
Coaching is not advice or making decisions for clients, coaches ask questions, provide information, and give feedback to help clients make their own choices, develop skills, and make progress toward their goals. Coaching isn’t therapy; it is for the healthy individual who needs some assistance in taking action toward realization of their vision, goals or desires.

Why would a physician hire a coach?
Physicians, like business executives and Fortune 500 CEO’s and their senior staff (all of whom frequently hire coaches), can benefit from the typical reasons for hiring a coach.
Coaches are able to:

  • Listen to unrelated information, pull it into a coherent whole and help develop strategies for moving ahead
  • Act as a trusted confident and thought partner during difficult times
  • Help client resolve thorny practice management issues.
  • Help clarify vision and goals and then help set out a strategy to reach them.
  • Help sort important issues to resolve challenges
  • Help client with career advancement, commitment and development.
  • Help the client have the professional or personal impact they want to have
  • Help the client deal more effectively with adversity
  • Help client develop performance by pointing out areas where enhancement is needed such as more effective work relationships, communication skills, emotional intelligence and leadership skills.
  • Help client adapt leadership skills to emerging situations
  • Help client to become better organized
  • Help client become more creative
  • Provide support for clients to learn new concepts or skills
  • Provide encouragement and support for reaching goals

Coaching Process
My style of coaching utilizes appropriate assessments and asking the right questions to

  • Hear carefully what you are saying,
  • Identify your resources (experiences and qualities),
  • Help you overcome blocks to success,
  • Help you develop a high degree of self-care,
  • Help you to identify your personal standards and
  • Assist you in clarifying your goals.

A step by step strategy is used which will include continual evaluation of your progress. Structure, focus, feedback and support will be provided. There will be specific homework assignments designed to further your goals. Like sports coaching, I do not do the actual work of achieving your goals, but I will help you become the best you can be if you apply your time, energy and hard work to the process.
