STEVEN R. DAUGHERTY, Ph.D.

Since receiving his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Chicago, Dr. Daugherty has focused on understanding the medical education process. He has conducted extensive research examining how students cope with the medical education experience, and how they are shaped by that experience. He has published over 50 articles on issues involving assessing the resident working environment, patterns of medical student adaptation, effective learning modalities, and both student and program evaluation in medical settings.Dr. Daugherty strives to combine a scholarly approach with an understanding of the practical realties of education conducted in a medical setting. Using this perspective, he has worked, and continues to work, on curriculum development, as well as curriculum and student evaluation at both the medical school and residency level. He blends an appreciation of students’ experiences with an appreciation for the high standards required for excellence in medical practice.Dr. Daugherty is unique in his combination of experience in both the academic medical centers and the new for-profit medical education sector. He believes that medical education institutions must focus on the possibilities of education that are going to be available in the near future, and not be limited to repeating educational programs of the past.

Dr. Daugherty brings to MERA special appreciation for the differences in medical education around the world, and expertise as to the particular personal and professional needs of international students who wish to complete their medical training in the US. He works regularly at designing curricula and educational experiences that recognize both the strengths and deficits of this diverse student population.
